Pay Attention To: Studio Nomad’s Tumblr

The Budapest-based studio – Studio Nomad, caught our attention with their project {cacophony}. The Studio Nomad artists share a bunch of different creative projects on their Tumblr, ranging in photography, graphics, video and really innovative installations. Their project {cacophony} aims to illustrate the lapses and problems in the flow of information and communication. They displayed a series of Walkman players on a wall, loaded with cassettes that are all reading from the same tape, which runs in and out of the devices, projecting sounds from a series of speakers. This creates a chaotic and non-understandable sound. Why they did this and what interests David Tarcali we found out in the interview below …

Interview below with Dávid Tarcali of Studio Nomad:

Can you explain how NOMAD got started? {studio nomad} the beginning … A workshop consists of a group of friends. We met long time ago, and since that we have worked on many creative works, and realized, we supplement and inspire each other. At the end of 2011, after a longer project, we found it important to have an identity, a common path what leads us during design, whatever the design is. The members of NOMAD are: Bence Pasztor, Soma Pongor and David Tarcali.

How did the video {cacophony} come about? We made something for a competition, and in a break we just talking about “what should we create next time” and this idea seemed to be cool and we jotted down the idea and kept our mind. We knew that we wanted to use analog technology because it is so foreign to our current generation.

Do you remember the first cassette tape you owned? Yes, I remember, my first original cassette was something cheap Hungarian pop.

What is your favorite life noise? My favorite life noise is when it’s raining – I enjoy the sound of a good storm.

What is a communication problem that concerns you about digital media? I guess nowadays the communication is faster then what we could imagine a year ago, and it is formidable for me. But some fields of design and architecture it is a useful factor and worth to be up to date.

What is overrated culturally right now? What is underrated? I think I should skip this question! It is a hard and complex question…If you think about art I think graphic design is a bit overrated and real fine arts (painting, sculpture) are underrated. But it is my opinion, because I’m a fan of fine arts.

What is something or someone you recommend the people reading this interview have on their radar? I would like to recommend one of my best friend Balázs Danyi he is also architect student and beside a photographer, I like how he sees the world through his camera. Check out his blog.

What is a quote you find inspirational? “going back to a simpler life is not a back stepward”

  1. Actually if you check out the sample of this song of Bach’s prelude from the Amazon website the sound of this tape bears a striking resemblance to some of the notes, frequencies & tempo. Cacophony may appear to be so, until you find that there are sounds in nature or produced/composed by humans that sound similar. I like what you did here. I hear music everywhere I suppose. Listen to track 4 & see if you agree with me a little. This is the 1st thing I thought when I heard your project http://www.amazon.com/Storm-Vanessa-Mae/dp/B000007TEW

    • unless of course that is the song that you guys sampled LOL-a tape of Bach’s prelude & in that case it’s still very recognizable & I can still detect the pattern. I honestly think if you play something truly cacophonic for awhile our brains would find some kind of pattern & connect it to something we already know in music or could use it to inspire a creation of music :-)
